When booking any travel reservation, be it hotel, rental car, etc. Remember to communicate with the company. For example, when renting a car in Europe there were so many things to consider. I did a ton of research online and was comfortable I had come up with the best deal. I had a few questions that I could not find the answers to online so I called the 80o number. The agent answered all of my questions and then he actually offered to look up the reservation and see if I had really found the best deal. We ended up getting our sat nav at a quarter of the price, and he got us a better rental rate. We saved $300 just by giving him a call and asking!!
Also, if you are booking a hotel, especially if it's a special occasion, an email to the hotel can go a long way. When booking our hotel for our most recent trip to Paris I really wanted to make sure we had the room I saw online so I popped them an email. The manager got back with me immediately and assured me I had booked the right room. We traded emails a few times and when we arrived at the hotel they had given us the only one of those three rooms with a balcony and a direct view of the Eiffel Tower. Sitting in that room with the doors open, curtains dancing in the breeze and watching the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower was amazing. So, make sure to email and ask questions. Also,  let them know if you are planning something special, they may be able to help you with more or better ideas.   - Tega
